I was dreaming when I wrote this...

OPEN SPACE GALLERY

2008

Printed black on blue paper the enlarged, nearly illegible handwriting displays the phrase: "I was dreaming when I wrote this so forgive me..." This piece is a meditation on the lyrics from the song "1999" by Prince. The song's opening, "I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray," beguiles the dance beat with surrealism. Was he dreaming when he first conceived the song? Was he dreaming of the future, post-1999? Can one dream and write? We tried to answer these questions over a few nights as we attempted to write the lyrics while physically asleep.
