portable hole

silkscreen print

2008

Printed blue on white paper this halftone image is a photograph of a cut paper sculpture. The "hole" was our first creative memory at a very young age. In cartoons, an oblong shape and vertical lines extended from the interior edges create the illusion of a hole. It was a magical moment of discovery for us, and a primitive understanding of illusion. In creating this drawing again out of paper, we've begun exploring drawing concepts as they relate to sculpture. Then by photographing and creating a halftone, we further reduced the image back to illusion and thus to a hole.
