5208 Ballard Ave. NW Seattle, WA 206.706.0969 20-TWENTY BALLARD INVITES YOU to view the works of Willow Robin and August Heffner as they explore a bevy of dreams, concerns and personal dilemmas through a collection of paintings and drawings. Currently based in Brooklyn, both artists were born in Missouri in 1980, and, in this exhibition, Heffner and Robin employ different techniques to describe their relationship with the Midwest, their lives in New York and the absurdity of it all. Willow Robin's process gives her work a unique vernacular and a specific style with its combinations of spray paint, stencil, pen and oils. Her work takes on both the exterior and interior, with subjects like nature's function in the city and the human digestive process. House plants play an integral role as they grow out of human organs; and organs into labyrinths. Each unique canvas creates a new world out of such familiar, and oft-forgotten, objects. August Heffner's ink and watercolor drawings illustrate life's most mundane thoughts, from the quest for self-improvement to the internet. In a grid of 7" x 10" works, he gives each fleeting idea its own holy shrine, complete with gold trim. Not without humor, each of these moments confront issues of human experience—love, desire, insecurity, frustration and revelation are seen through distance-runners, monsters, soldiers and dying kids. |
| Willow Robin enjoys drawing, painting, photograph taking, filmmaking, bike-riding, krump-dancing, sleeping, creek bed playing, rolling in the grass, car riding, traveling, book-making, bug collecting and plant watering. This year, her short film Look was screened at the New York Bicycle Film Festival. She can usually be found editing commercials and eating donuts. | August Heffner was born in an antique store in Missouri and, many years later, received a BFA in design the great city of Lawrence, Kansas. He has since found his way to New York to work as a designer and typographer. He has worked for clients such as Martha Stewart, Harper Collins, Rizzoli Milan, Fisher-Price, Vanity Fair, American Red Cross and Nonesuch Records, among others. He lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan and enjoys riding his bicycle betwixt the two. |
